Accomplishments as the President and Member of the Pleasant Valley School Board
Currently I am President of the Pleasant Valley School Board. As a parent and a business woman, I have a vested interest in our student’s education. I have 2 school-age kids currently in the Pleasant Valley School District. I ran for this position with only one agenda: the kids. As a board member I feel it is important to get the best for our students and their future!
Here are the goals that we have achieved since I have been in office. Along with my goals when running for this office.
Goal 1 – Extend instructional school days to 180 days.
“First, to sustain our 175 instructional school days and to extend it to 180 days through public and private funding. Currently our governor is threatening to make MAJOR trigger cuts if Prop 30 does not pass. That is a cut in education by $5.5 Billion dollars. Our district will also have the option to reduce instructional days by 15 day. If we cut our instructional days, we will be the “Lowest in the nation” and far behind other advanced nations. How can we do this? Our state is already ranked 41 for Education! As a board member I want to prevent cutting days.”
Goal 2 – We have been holding parents education nights, partnering with the City of Camarillo and community to provide additional support to our families. We have added staff development days and opportunities to learn more at conferences for our teachers.
“Second, we need to engage our community and set up volunteer programs. We have smart people who are seniors or retired that live right here in Camarillo. Why not use our resources to help our teachers and our students with programs such as tutoring, after school activities, and reading. Research shows that when the community is involved in education that students have higher grades and test scores. We see this in such schools as Santa Rosa, La Mariposa, and CAPE. Why can’t we support our teachers and students at all schools within our district?
Goal 3 – We created a strong 3-year and 5-year strategic plan to ensure that departments are working together, that we have the same goals to strive for, to be fiscally responsible and to maximize our 21st century learning fro our students.
“Third, we need to maximize our 21st century technology into ALL of our schools. Every student learns differently and technology can help them. For example, at one of our schools each student has a laptop sponsored by private funds. At another elementary school they have smart boards and tablets. All raised by private funds. Then at a middle school, they have nothing. Why can’t we get every school up to speed? We also have computer labs that cannot help the entire class. I was in our tech lab helping out and had only 18 programs to use. The smallest class size is 20 and up to 34.”
I believe that with goals and teamwork we can strive for the highest level of excellence in our schools and district. I have invest the time necessary to make Camarillo’s school district and students successful. It has been a pleasure to serve!
